CONTEST RULES AND GUIDELINES
A picture is worth 1,000 words, making our course photos one of the most important and impactful elements in communicating with our community. Here is your chance to show off your photography skills with a fantastic image of your HIOBS experience. Keep an eye on our fan pages to find many of these images featured on HIOBS social media channels and course website pages throughout the year.
- To be eligible for this contest, you must be a HIOBS instructor or student.
- Photos are eligible for this contest only if they are taken on a HIOBS course.
- Image files must be less than 10 MB to upload to portal.
- HIOBS administrative staff will vote on submitted photos.
- Winning photos will be shared on social media with credit to photographer.
- Review categories in the prize section below for guidelines on subject matter.
If you are a student who took photos with the course camera and would like to submit one of them, please access the course album here where you may download the photo and then upload to this contest portal.
All submitted photos may be used in website, print and social media channels by HIOBS or Outward Bound USA, without limitation. Photographer credit will be given when possible.

Best Overall Photo
Student Sea: $100 Patagonia gift card, HIOBS hoodie and hat, image featured on HIOBS social media
Student Land: $100 Patagonia gift card, HIOBS hoodie and hat, image featured on HIOBS social media
Instructor: $100 Patagonia gift card and $50 gift certificate to HIOBS online store.
Best Video: $100 Patagonia gift card, HIOBS hoodie and hat, image featured on HIOBS YouTube & Facebook
In addition to our overall best categories, we will select one winner from each of the following subject-matter categories. Winners will receive a HIOBS hat & HIOBS Nalgene water bottle.
We will be selecting from these categories:
Inspiration: This photo will be compelling and uplifting
Compassion: This photo will demonstrate the Outward Bound teaching "And above all, compassion"
Challenge: This photo demonstrates what Bob Rheault said, “Hard isn’t bad, hard is just hard.”
Education: This photo captures the backcountry and technical skills and/or character development.
Video Shorts: For the go pro enthusiast videos of up to 2 minutes.
